Exceptional Dental, situated on the Gold Coast Queensland, recommend that you follow these techniques to effectively remove plaque from around your teeth and gums daily:
- Brush your teeth at least twice per day (after breakfast and after dinner).
- Use an electric toothbrush
- Brush with a soft round bristle heads
- Place your toothbrush where the gum meets the tooth, at a 45 degree angle (enabling you to clean under the gum line). Dental plaque accumulates along the tooth at the gum line, so it is essential to focus on this area
- Brush your gums very gently. Steer the electric toothbrush along the outer surface of the upper teeth first allowing it to do the work. Do not move it up and down like a standard toothbrush. After covering (slowly) the upper teeth on the outside change to the inside (palate side) of these teeth and again move the brush head slowly around the arch. Then brush the lower teeth in the same manner.
- Because the electric brush is rotating and vibrating as it is being directed over the surfaces of the teeth, it is very important that you do not manipulate the brush vigorously at the same time. This could damage the fragile gum.
- Use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue which will remove additional bacteria while freshening your breath. Most applicable first thing in the morning to rake out nocturnal reflux from the stomach.
- Replace your toothbrush head whenever the bristles start to fray, (frayed bristles will quickly damage the soft gums) or after illness.
- Use toothpaste with fluoride for cavity protection, or as recommended by your Dental Hygienist.
